I'm hoping to get some feedback on an idea I have for a letterbox.
It's based on an issue near and dear to my heart, human rights issues
in north Korea. I'm considering placing a box about the subject, with
perhaps address to web sites that give more information.
Nothing gruesome (not in the box, anyway!), and nothing
really "political", this issue has people from all political
spectrums interested. However not enough people are interested and
and so I thought a box with that theme might get more people aware of
the issue.
Is this a bad idea-is it mixing politics with "fun"? I noticed
someone mentioned doing a "Gay Marraige" themed box, that's what gave
me the idea. I don't want to step on toes or plant a box in poor
taste. Or offend people with my boxes, though I can't imagine anyone
being offended by the box except maybe insane dictator types in
elevator shoes-and how many of them letterbox?
Any feedback much appreciated!

make what inspires you. just title the box so people understand,
then let individuals make their own decision if they want to go
looking for boxes with a "political" theme like human rights or gay
marriage.

I am a no rules advocate when it comes to letterboxing. I say if thats what you really want to do, make the box. With the popularity of letterboxing increasing, political boxes and controversial boxes are inevitable. I'm waiting to see what happens when the boxes pop up with very unpopular, far out fringe views. It will happen sooner or later. Will we still think it is ok? I think it would be nice to have some sort of notice near the top of the clues telling what the stamp is about. Just because you disagree with the stamp, doesn't mean you can't go and find it but if they are offended, maybe they shouldn't. The notes that people write in the log books could be interesting. Anyway, my no rules are good rules policy still stands with me......Chuck and Molly

We've already heard controversy on this list regarding
religious-themed boxes, why not other human issues? It's my personal
belief that if you have a thought to share, share it. Those who are
either opposed or not interested can avoid the box if they wish. No
one is being forced to find boxes (at least we hope not).
Now, workers rights are something dear to our hearts. We've put out a
box or two with that in mind, especially the history of the labor
movement. Now, we think everyone should know that a hundred-ish years
ago, ordinary people worked 10-14 hour days, 6 days a week, and didn't
make enough in wages to feed their families. How far we've come, but
how? The controversial part of this is that there are STILL employers
who exploit workers. Some people think that trade unions' days are
long gone. (I know better).
Don't worry so much, just do what you feel is right and good.

I'd like to throw in a note, though. Although we have no children or even easily offended cats, and take no umbrage at grown-up themes, Diane and I are cognizant of the kids out there letterboxing. A short sentence stating, up front, any issue that needs further, er, explanation to young'uns would be a good idea. It was considerate of the Naked Woman in the Waterfall planter to say in the clues that there's a picture of a nekkid person on the stamp. Your call.

I don't favor any rule agin it, but I shall personally avoid any such
letterboxes that feature political-religious-philosophical
overtures. Nor do I feel that this Talk List is the place for their
airing.

I don't think that is a bad idea at all. If you place a sheet of
paper with a breif discription of the issue at heart and some web
sites people can visit to learn more, it is then their choice on
whether or not they choose to visit those sites and become educated.
It is still fun to search for the box and let's face it...this is an
educational hobby, too! Good luck and let me know where you place it!

I feel similarly. As a newbie, I think my enthusiasm would be quite
diminished if I were turning up "advertizing" boxes for religion,
politics, charities, etc. Like Bob said it's not a "rule" thing
just a courtesy thing. I think notices with the clues that this is
a political box, or other "opinion" box would be appreciated by
many. We face enough advertizing in our lives...soon the trees we
hike by will have Nike swooshes carved into them.

It's your box so you get to pick the theme. Some of us enjoy politics too.
